JEAN
LOUIS THEODORE GENTILZ was born in France
and studied art at the Imperial School of Mathematics and Drawing in
Paris.
Gentilz moved to Texas in 1844 as a surveyor employee of Henri
Castro, the founder of the colonist community of Castroville. He taught art at his home and at the
the St. Mary's School of Art from its founding in 1852.
He is best known for his genre paintings of the
multicultural San Antonio area and historically accurate renderings
of the people, missions and buildings in Texas, as well
as scenes in New Mexico and Mexico. |
