Ira
David (I.D.) Shepler
(1876-1944) San
Antonio,Texas
Shepler was born in West Virginia in 1876. Moved to San Antonio,
Texas in 1919.
In San Antonio, he met the artist Peter Lanz Hohnstedt,
which it is believed he
studied with. His impressionist landscapes are
definitely influenced by
Hohnstedt's works.
Shepler's
paintings are of very good quality and consistently so. He
demonstrated a keen
sense for color, balance and rhythm. His
subjects were mostly Texas Hill
Country landscapes. Occasional
coastal scenes and Colorado landscapes. He
designed and carved the
frames for many of his paintings.
Shepler
maintained a studio at the Gibb's Building, downtown San
Antonio in the 1930's.
His earliest
exhibit was at the Witte Museum in 1930. At the exhibit,
there were 77 artists
exhibiting 121 paintings. In 1932 Shepler had a
one-man show at the San Pedro
Playhouse, a popular location for
many art exhibits. Exhibits outside of San
Antonio were in Lubbock,
Texas 1931 and Ft. Worth, Texas 1936.
