Clara Caffrey Pancoast

Born Layette, Louisiana; moved to San Antonio before 1891.
Pancoast
studied art & music at the Home Institute in New Orleans, LA.
Pancoast was a
journalist at the San Antonio Express News and the San Antonio Light. A writer by
profession, an artist by choice. She is best known for her impressionistic landscapes,
bursting with color. She also painted florals, old buildings including the missions of San
Antonio and occasionally people were included in her subjects.
She was one of
Jose Arpa's prize students of the 1920's and early 1930's, entering her canvases in many local, state and
national exhibits, including the Edgar B. Davis competition.
In recent
years, the works of Pancoast have been discovered and appreciated by
collectors. There have been recent exhibits including her work. Her works are illustrated
in the books: "An Encyclopedia of Women Artists of the American West"; "Art
For History's Sake"; "Dictionary of Texas Artists" and Powers
Book "Texas Painters, Sculptors & Graphic Artists".
